Water is at the base of every ecosystem, including forests, lakes, and wetlands, on which our present and future food and nutritional security depend. Growing water scarcity is now one of the leading challenges for sustainable development. Water use has been growing globally at more than twice the rate of population increase in the last century, and an increasing number of regions are reaching the limit at which water services can be sustainably delivered, especially in arid regions.

What is water scarcity?

Water scarcity can mean scarcity in water availability due to physical shortage, or scarcity in access due to the failure of institutions to ensure a regular supply or a lack of adequate infrastructure.

This challenge will become more pressing as the world’s population continues to grow, their living standards increase, diets change, and the effects of climate change intensify. If this growth continues, the world will soon face a water shortage. For this reason, water conservation is important because fresh clean water is a limited resource, as well as a costly one. If we don’t change our habits now, global water demand could increase by 50 per cent by 2030.

Normally, a person requires about a gallon of drinking water per day, but the average person actually uses much more than that. Therefore, making simple choices in our daily routine can help save a lot of water.

  1. Use a low-flow showerhead. With a low-flow showerhead, you can save 57 litres of water during a 10-minute shower.

2) Choose tea over coffee. Tea normally requires less water than coffee. You can save 114 litres of water.

3) Skip your proteins for breakfast. Having milk and cereal instead of two eggs for breakfast can save 190 litres of water.

4) Prefer water over soda. One litre of soda requires around 125 litres of water whereas water 0.5 litres.

5) Don’t forget to eat your greens! Eating salad instead of hamburger can save more than 2,271 litres of water!

6) Treat yourself to a beer. If you feel like giving yourself a treat for dinner, you’d better choose a beer instead of one glass of wine. This would save about 38 litres of water.

7) 1/3 lb. chicken instead of 1/3 lb. beef. Normally beef production requires four times the amount of water to produce the equivalent amount of chicken. Eating chicken instead of beef can save 1,515 litres of water.

8) Use the dishwasher. It might seem hard to believe, but running your automatic dishwasher has great potential to increase your water savings. Energy Star dishwashers save about 57 litres of water and are more efficient than hand dishwashing.

So, how much water can one person save in one day?

These examples saved an estimated 4,992 litres of water in one day for one person.

Following these tips will put you on the right path to conserving water in your household. Conserving water means using our water supply wisely and be responsible. When you conserve water, you ensure that there will be enough for people to use in your community and it protects the environment. Prudent and economic water supply can make a huge difference and it will eventually protect the water for generations to come.

With our Alxedo Smart Water Purifier, we try to support people in their mission of using our most valuable resource in a more sustainable way. A litre of soda requires already more than 250 times more water than a litre of water. But did you know that also one litre of bottled water requires up to 4 times more water than a litre of purified water.
