Have you ever imagined how much our skin helps us every day? Perhaps, because of the fast-paced lifestyle we lead, we do not stop thinking about it. However, the skin is the largest organ of our body because, in adults, the skin covers an area of about 2 m2, weighs about 4.5–5 kg, and its thickness varies from 0.5–4 mm depending on its location, constituting 30% of the total weight of an adult.

The skin is such a vital organ, which must be well cared for to be in good condition because the skin fulfills functions such as:

  • Store water and grease.
  • It is a sensory organ.
  • It prevents water loss.
  • It prevents the entry of bacteria.
  • It acts as a barrier between an organism and its environment.
  • It regulates body temperature through perspiration.

But where do we start taking care of it?

The Structure of the Skin.

The skin has 3 main layers: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis.

1. The epidermis or outermost layer is divided into stratum corneum, stratum lucidum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, and stratum basale or germinal.

1.1. The stratum basale, cells in constant mitosis, participate in the regeneration of other layers.

1.2. The stratum spinosum contains postmitotic cells of the stratum basale containing keratin fibers, melanosomes, and Langerhans cells.

1.3. In the stratum granulosum, cells synthesize keratohyalin, the precursor substance of keratin.

1.4. The stratum lucidum is in the thickest part of the skin on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Translucent cells filled with keratin filaments.

1.5. Finally, the stratum corneum is the most exposed to all the external factors, and requires 10–13% of water to maintain its properties because if it has less than 10%, the skin becomes fragile, dries out, and may present wrinkles and even more severe damage.

The process by which the epidermal layer is worn away and replaced takes approximately 30 days.

The three layers of skin: hypodermis, dermis and epidermis.

2. Dermis

It is formed by connective tissue, vascular and nervous structures, and cutaneous appendages. It is the support and elasticity structure, as it contains more than 75% of collagen, elastin, and reticulin fibers.

It consists of two layers.

2.1. Papillary layer: It contains the circulatory system, nerve endings, and sensory and lymphatic vessels.

2.2. Reticular layer: this is where the collagen fibers are located, which form elastic fibers that provide movement and elasticity.

3. The hypodermis

It is the deepest layer, consists of adipose tissue, also known as subcutaneous fatty tissue.

As you can see, each of the layers of the skin has varied structures and functions, and at the same time, their focus is your well-being.

So take care of it, moisturizing it both inside and out.
