Sleeping too little can cause dehydration.

It’s a new day, and you’re supposed to be in full gear to start your busy schedule, yet you have a pounding headache.

Is it something that has happened to you?

If you answered yes, the first thing that may come to your mind is to take an aspirin to get rid of the headache, but is that the solution?

We would tell you that, although it may help, it is not the answer because it would only solve the symptom and not what is causing it, so the answer begins by reflecting on:

-You exercise

-You are stressed

-You drink a lot of caffeine

-Smoking

And, above all, are you sleeping well and hydrating yourself? Because according to Pennsylvania State University, if you are sleeping less than 6 hours a day, your body is getting dehydrated, and even worse if you are not drinking enough water during the day.

Why does your body become dehydrated if you don’t sleep well or sleep too little?

Dehydration occurs during the night when our body releases vasopressin (a hormone that helps the blood vessels to contract, and makes the kidneys control the amount of water and salt in the body) faster than during the day. When you sleep less, less hormone is released and this produces a headache-like sensation, similar to a hangover.

According to El Economista, 4 out of 10 Mexicans have trouble sleeping well, that is 41% of the population. Imagine how dehydrated the population is.

As if that were not enough, most of the time it is not water that is chosen to quench this thirst, but sweetened beverages that end up causing other diseases.

But how can this be solved?

Although the obvious answer could be to drink water, which is true. You can drink water not only when you already have that hangover feeling, but to prevent it on those nights when you sleep little or have trouble falling asleep.

If you’ve read this far, and you’re thinking I’ve heard that before, don’t worry, we understand! It seems to be the solution, but what if you are part of that population that has a hard time drinking water?

Just don’t take it? Tell you all the reasons why you should take it and the consequences if you don’t. Maybe that’s the solution for some people, but sometimes people take action until they are at their limit.

At Alxedo, that’s the least we want, what we wish for you in those moments when you are dehydrated is that you have options that you can continue to implement that will keep your body hydrated.

One is adopting new sleeping habits that will allow your body to have the right level of hydration so that you can perform at your best the next day.

Another perhaps unpopular opinion, but here it is: Say goodbye to your cell phone, screens, and anything that emits blue light at least an hour before bedtime because blue light suppresses the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep, which can delay your bedtime until tomorrow.

Finally, yes, perhaps it’s a little predictable, but it’s fair to say, that one solution is drinking water, but the difference is that it can be natural water or carbonated water, the point is to stay hydrated.
