Planet earth seen from the outside.

Water is the liquid that gives life to everything existing on this planet, and is also responsible for creating even what we could not imagine.

But what is a fact is that water is everywhere, whether we see it in some of its liquid, solid, or gaseous states, or whether it has been part of the process for you to have the products you have today, as explained in our article on virtual water:

“You need to know this about water and water footprint.”

Knowing how important water is, today we want to share 9 curiosities about it that will surprise you.

1. Frozen water weighs less

That’s right, water in its solid state weighs 9% less than when it is liquid, and although it seems obvious, that’s why ice floats on water.

2. Water and its heat capacity

Heat capacity refers to the heat amount needed to raise the temperature of one gram of a substance, one degree Celsius.

In the case of water, it has a high heat capacity, which means that a large amount of heat is required to raise its temperature.

3. Water is the main regulator of the earth’s temperature.

Through the water cycle, the temperature of our planet is regulated.

According to the UN, water is at the center of sustainable development and, it is essential for socio-economic development, including energy, food production, and the well-being of the planet’s flora and fauna.

Water is a fundamental part of modulating climate change.

4. Freshwater

Only 2.5% of the water on Earth is freshwater. Of this amount, 0.5% is in subway reservoirs and 0.01% in rivers and lakes.

5. Water used for bathing

An average person spends 100 liters or more in a 5-minute shower, unfortunately, some people take longer than this.

6. Water in your diet.

A person can survive for a whole month without food but would survive for a maximum of 7 days without drinking water.

On average, a person should drink at least 2 liters a day to stay healthy , however, this varies depending on the physical activity of each person, as well as age, since at each stage the hydration requirement is different.

You can consult the article “This is the specific amount of water you should take at each stage of your life.” to check if you are drinking the water your body needs.

7. Water and soft drinks

A large amount of water is used to make soft drinks, for example, according to the Financial Report, 34.5 liters of water are used to make half a liter of Coca-Cola, which means that 69 liters of water are used to make one liter of this soft drink.

8. Water pollution

It has several causes, but, something that should be made more aware of is wastewater management, as 80% of wastewater is discharged into the environment.
