Plastic water bottles have blue caps and red ones.

With the arrival of a new year, there are new resolutions, new beginnings, and this unique enthusiasm that invites total renewal.

But this also means the annual payments, other expenses, and products and services increase, like what happens with water jugs.

However, according to the Inter-American Development Bank, 81% of the Mexican population still uses water jugs and bottled water as the primary source of drinking water.

And the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) indicates that three out of four households consume bottled or jug water.

That is why Mexico occupies the first place as the largest consumer of bottled water by the hand of Thailand, according to Baruch Sangines, a UNAM geographer, comments.

Therefore, we want to share with you 5 Reasons why to say goodbye to water jugs and bottles this year:

Map of Mexico with statistics about the prices of bottled water and sparkling water.
  1. Increasing prices of water jugs and bottled water.

In 2023, the costs of water jugs will rise throughout the Mexican Republic, as shown below with the presentation of 20 liters:

-In Mexico city, it will now cost MXN 53.

-In Tijuana MXN 54.

-In Merida MXN 42.

-The rest of the republic is MXN 41.

The same goes for mineral water which will now cost MXN 16 per liter and MXN 22 for 1.5L.

2. Plastic Waste

According to Greenpeace, it takes 500 years to get a plastic bottle to degrade.

Only 9 % gets recycled, 40% disposes of as wasted, 19 % incinerated, 50 % used as a sanitary landfill, and 22% is burned or ends up in the sea.

Pile of water bottles near the water.

The latter causes that marine species to consume them, causing their death, and when they get caught they end up in our dishes as microplastics.

On the other hand, when plastic consumption diminishes, there will be fewer polluting gases and greenhouse effect related to their transportation and distribution.

3. Water Privatization

Drinking water is a human right everyone should have access to; however, this is not always the case.

And consuming bottled water or water jugs only aggravates the problem because soft drinks companies and other sectors privatize the river water ending up selling it at excessive prices.

4. Water Waste

Because to obtain 1 liter of bottled water, more than 3 liters of water is used, including the manufacture of the bottle and the plastic cap.

It is estimated that during the filtration process to bottle 1 liter of water, 2.33 liters get wasted.

5. Water Quality

An empty water bottle is in dirty water.

A study from IPN University in 2022 revealed that 50% of water jugs contained fecal matter and coliform bacteria.
